Standard field specular microscopy examination was performed on long tem wearers of hard and soft contact lenses and control patients. There was no significant difference in mean cell area and cell denisty between patient groups and control group. But frequency of hexagons were significantly low in patient groups (HCL 57%, SCL 62.7%, normal controls 71.4%). The most severe morphological change was found in hard contact lens group. Daily soft contact lens wearing can also cause endothelial polymegethism and pleomorphism. The longer use of contact lenses was associated with an increase in the degree of polymegethism and pleomophism. The cause of the endothelial changes induced by contact lenses is unknown. It seems that hypoxia plays an important role in endothelial changes.
