Contrast Sensitivity Following Radial Keratotomy

We tested contrast sensitivity in 14 patients (28 eyes), ranging froth 1 to 24 months after radial keratotomy. These patients underwent a standard eight-incision radial keratotomy procedure. We also tested 22 unoperated eyes in another group of 11 patients, whose spherical equivalent and age were similar to that of the operated group. The present study was to evaluate wheather radial keratotomy produces an alteration in contrast sensitivity by comparing this function in operated versus unoperated eyes. Impairment of contrast sensitivity was found in early months immediately after surgery, but the function recovered up to the level of unoperated eyes about one year after operation. However, the contrast sensitivity did not reveal significant difference under the condition the glare source existed.
