The Optic Disc and Parapapillary Changes in Highly Myopic Eyes

Purpose: To evaluate the cupping of the optic disc and changes of the parapapillary region in highly myopic eyes. Methods: We retrospectively studied 2123 highly myopic subjects with refractive errors greater than -6.0D and a control group of 261 subjects with myopia of less than -6.0D. Measurements included cycloplegic refraction, biometric axial length and optic disc stereo-photographs. Results: The incidence of cup/disc ratio and 4 types of disc cupping were not significantly different between highly myopic subjects and control subjects. However, the size of parapapillary crescent was correlated with refractive status, axial length and aging. Parapapillary hard crescent was also associated with more myopic, longer axial length and older subjects. Conclusions: Optic disc cupping did not show significant changes with myopic status. However, parapapillary changes of optic disc such as the size and type of parapapillary crescent correlated with the age, myopic refraction and axial length.
