對於十七世紀荷蘭統治下臺灣的殖民主義與傳教工作,雖然研究者不乏其人,不過似乎都忽略了殖民政府、敎會與當地土著之間複雜的互動過程,更遑論瞭解存於殖民情境中有關再現、權力、改宗與抗爭等諸多問題。 本論文試圖分析這一段殖民史中,有關對異己性(otherness)的再現與挪用,與殖民控制與反抗等問題。從G. Candidius的報告、R. Junius的遠征與土著方言的使用,我們知道不管是殖民或改宗都不只是強迫性的屈服而已,還必是符號或再現的政治學與經濟學;它說明了征服與臣服是透過什麽樣的過程成爲可能,以及權力運作的暴力性和必然面臨的內在矛盾與外在挑戰,這些無可避免地構成有關異己論述的特質。
Although researchers have given attention to the colonial history of 17th century Taiwan under Dutch rule, they seem to have ignored the complicated relations among the colonial government, the Church and the natives, to say nothing of the problems about power, representation, conversion and struggle in colonialism. In this paper, I attempt to analyse the processes of representation and appropriation of otherness in the colonial mission, and to understand issues related to colonial control and resistance. By interpreting G. Candidius' account, R. Junius' expedition and the use of the native vernacular in the mission, the present paper shows how conquest as well as subjectification are made possible through the violence of the practical and symbolic operations, and the hidden ambivalence and contradiction in the colonial discourse.
