Structural balanced cross section is a geological cross section that is reconstructed base on strict method and constrained by all kinds of surface data collected along the cross section, including locations of exposed rock unit boundary and fault plane and their dip angles, and subsurface data, including well log and seismic data. Reconstruction of balanced cross section should also refer to variation in geological characters along the cross section. Structural balanced cross section is better than the conventional one in providing accurate geological deformation model and great help for evaluating prospect. The applications of structural balanced cross section on petroleum exploration are 1) to understand the relationships of depositional facies before tectonic movement, 2) to determine the relative timing of formation of geological structures and oil generation and migration, 3) to detect the validity of the interpreted or predicted structural geometry, 4) to measure deformation rate of geological structure, 5) to predict structural high, and 6) to discover new style of structural trap.
