Titanium oxide is widely used in industry as an additive for polymer, paints, cosmetics. Recently the anatase structure of titanium oxide has been extensively used as a photocatalyst. However, the preparation of nanosized and thin film titanium oxide still have plenty room for study. This report reviews the preparation method in the literature. There are many methods to prepare titanium oxide, such as sol-gel, microemulsion, reverse micelle, and hydrothermal method. Sol-gel method has been extensively studied. However, the alkoxide material is expensive and it is easy to hydrolysis upon exposure to moisture air. Hydrothermal method also can produce nanosized particle, however, the cost is high and it is difficult to have continuous process. One of the method is to convert titanium trichloride to titanium hydroxide gel. It is then converted to titanium oxide upon heating in water by dehydration. The product is nanosized titanium oxide sol in water. It can be used to prepare thin film on any substrate.
