Hydrodesulfurization catalyst is widely used in petroleum refining industry to remove sulfur element from crude oil. Its function is to lower the concentration of sulfur oxides (SO_x) while burning gasoline or diesel, or to avoid the poison of catalyst used in backend process. In the past the deactivated catalyst resulted from coke deposition was treated as hazard industrial waste. Based on the development of circular economy, Taiwan CPC Corporation actively promotes the application of catalyst regeneration. The activity of spent catalyst can be restored to 70~80% of fresh one via burning off volatile hydrocarbon, coke and sulfur deposited on the surface or pore of the catalyst. The regenerated catalyst reuses to treat the feedstock with lower carbon number. Furthermore, introducing the ex-situ presulfiding technology which converts the catalyst from oxide state to partial sulfur state can not only decrease the hydrogen consumption and sour water production but also reduce the operating period and inconvenience while starting up.
