The economic development of the last decade in Taiwan has urged strong demand of land space for urban, industrial and leisure uses. Because most plain areas are designated for agricultural use, development of slopeland near the urban area becomes an alternative target consequently. Grading or excavation of slopeland will inevitably change its metastable status and accelerate the rate of erosion and sedimention. All might result in severe geologic hazards to the human environment.Study of environmental geology provides an effective tool to reduce or to mitigate impacts of geologic hazards. Under the project of ”Establishment of environmental geology database” awarded by the Construction Department of Taiwan Provicial Government, the Energy and Resources Laboratories has accomplished investigation and evaluation of environmental geology for more than 260,000 hectares of slopeland in past eleven years . The methodology of study and application of the database will be discussed in the paper.
