Environmental sensitive areas are termed to include areas that have significant value to human societies, or areas with characteristics of potential natural hazard, which are likely to result in adverse environmental effects due to inadequate development activities. In this paper, the definitions and functions of environmental sensitive areas are described firstly. Based on the definition, by use of GIS and mapping techniques, the environmental sensitive areas of central region of Taiwan are delineated.
