Reinforced soil retaining structures have become one of the most popular retaining systems in the past few years. Advantages of reinforced soil retaining structures include better seismic resistance, low construction cost, and better landscaping functions. As popular as landscaping issues and green structures have been prompted in construction industry, the reinforced soil retaining structures is recognized as one of the best replacement of the less attractive conventional retaining structures. In this paper, the author not only presents the major landscaping functions and applications of reinforced soil retaining structures, but also important design issues for the complicated reinforced soil retaining systems.
