Research on the Depiction of Tiger and Magpies

摘要

虎鵲圖（或稱鵲虎圖）在中國，韓國，和日本，都是一個十分流行的虎畫專題。不少學者對這個有趣的畫題，也曾作過一些論述。但是，有關此一畫題的來源或象徵內含，至今仍然存在著許多疑問，沒有明確的解答。在此文中，我將針對這一畫題，以我個人的研究心得，配合現存畫作，對它在中國的建立和發展變化，以及它對韓國虎畫的影響，作一個簡單的介紹。

Tiger and magpies (huque or hu-ch'ueh 虎鵲) is one of the most popular tiger painting themes found in China, Japan, and Korea. Many scholars have commented on this interesting motif, yet so far no one has yet provided any information on the origin of this interesting design and its symbolic content. Inspired by the increasing interest in this topic by scholars in both Korea and Japan, I have further explored this specific topic. In this article, I will introduce some of the major findings of my initial investigation on the historical development of this theme in China using both written records and surviving paintings.
