The Spread of the Dutch Reformed Belief in Asia in the Seventeenth Century: A Comparative Study on Catechisms in Formosa and South East Asia

摘要

基督新教在十七世紀隨著荷蘭聯合東印度公司的海外擴張而進入亞洲，荷蘭改革宗教會的神職人員在亞洲各地教化原住民時，為了使當地住民瞭解其信仰，以他們可理解的語言編寫各種教義教材，或是翻譯聖經，以教導各地的原住民。這些以葡萄牙語、馬來語、新港語(西拉雅語)或虎尾壠語等編譯的文獻，因各種原因被保存或是出版。本文試圖就這些當時使用於臺灣及東南亞地區的教義教材－特別是以當地語言編譯的教理問答進行探討。除了介紹教理問答在各地的使用情形，也分析比較各種教理問答的內容，並探討其源流；以說明荷蘭改革宗的信仰如何藉由教理問答在十七世紀的臺灣與東南亞傳佈。

This essay intends to discuss the catechisms compiled in local languages in the Dutch East Indies, namely Formosa and South East Asia, in the Seventeenth Century. These compiled catechisms, as well as translated Bible, and all other compiled materials, were used in the Dutch East Indies in order to educate indigenous people, so that they could understand the Dutch Reformed Belief. In this essay, the development of the Dutch Reformed Church in the Dutch East Indies in the Seventeenth Century would first be introduced, and then the origins of the catechisms used for Christian education, namely Sint-Aldegonde's Kort Begryp, Heidelberg Catechism, as well as those compiled by the Dutch missionaries would be compared, in order to figure out how the Dutch Reformed Belief was spread in the Seventeenth Century in the Dutch East Indies through catechising.
