In the 17th and 18^(th) century, the Thien Nam Tu Chi Lo Do was the most central Vietnamese geography book, which had various copies and revisions. This book represents the itinerary map tradition written by ancient Vietnamese. The earliest version of Thien Nam Tu Chi Lo Do was written by Do Ba in 1686. It is based on the Itinerary of conquering Champa by Le Thanh Tong in the late of 15th century. After the 19th century, Vietnamese geography books tradition was replaced by Local Chronicles, which reflected the strengthening of Vietnamese political control over the newly developed areas.
