Analysis of Health Status and Medical Advice on Nurse Aides

Nurse aides look after patients on a long-term basis. As the patients they attend to change frequently, and their working places are hospitals or nursing homes, their health status indirectly affect the quality of the care they provide. In the past, a large number of nurse aides did not receive health examinations and annual follow-up before starting to look after patients. Over the last few years, many hospitals began to conduct health examinations on their nurse aides. However, the hospitals do not have a thorough evaluation of whether the health status of the nurse aides allows them to look after patients. We therefore conducted an analysis on the health examinations of 50 nurse aides from a teaching hospital with around 700 beds, and used SPSS for Windows 16 to analyze the data of their annual health examinations. Their mean body mass index (BMI) was 26.6±5.1, with 17 nurse sides (34%) being obese (with a BMI ＞ 27). There were nine nurse aides having hypertension, 39 having major diseases (including hepatitis B, diabetes mellitus, uterine myoma, thyroid disorder as well as peptic ulcer disease), 37 having received operation, 23 taking medications, 24 having a waist circumference greater than normal limit (i.e. 80 and 90 cm in women and men, respectively), and 10 having varicose veins of the lower limbs. These data revealed that most nurse aides were unhealthy, although they have to execute first-line caring jobs such as moving, turning, and bathing patients. We propose suggestions from a physician's viewpoint on whether the health status of the nurse aides is suitable for their job and whether a strict standard is needed for hiring capable nurse aides.
