An Investigation of the Acceptance and Willingness to Use a New Clinical Technology System among Nursing Staff

Background: With the advancement of information technology, various medical institutions continue to develop new informative systems, hoping to reach the level of smart medical care and improve work efficiency. However, few studies explore the clinical staff's feelings and acceptance to a new informative system. Nursing handover is an important basis for continuing nursing care and to effectively control information and deal with unpredictable changes of patients' condition for nursing staff is challenging. Therefore, using informative systems to assist nursing staff in systematic handover can improve work efficiency. However, researches regarding to nursing staff's feelings about a newly introduced system remains unclear. Purpose: This study is aimed to use a new "collaboration platform for nursing handover of patient safety" as an example and to explore the "perceived usefulness", "perceived ease of use", "attitude to use", and "willingness to use" of nursing staff, as well as to analyze the relationships between those variables. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational study was conducted with an convenient sampling to test 43 nursing staff, who use the new collaborative platform of nursing handover system, to explore their "perceived usefulness", "perceived ease of use", "attitude to use", and "willingness to use." The measurements, based on the Technology Acceptance Model, included five major subscales involving: "perceived system quality and functional acceptance", "perceived usefulness", "perceived ease of use", "attitude to use" and "willingness to use". Analysis of variance and regression analysis of Durbin-Watson test were applied to analyze. Results: Nursing staff's experiences of using the newly introduced "collaborative platform of nursing handover system" showed that the "perceived ease of use" is higher than the "perceived usefulness" (4.6 vs. 4.3); both of the nursing staff's perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use for the system were significantly and positively associated with the "attitude to use"(t = 5.942, p = .045), and indirectly correlated to "willingness to use" (t = 5.743, p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study confirmed that the willingness of nursing staff to accept a new informative system can be affected by whether the system is easy to operate and the attitude towards the system. We also verified that the simpler the operation of a system, the more useful the user will think, which would affect the attitude and willingness to use a system.
