The Challenges of Using English Picture Story Books with Primary School Students in Taiwan

使用英文圖畫故事書在兒童英語教學上所面臨的挑戰

摘要


隨著小學英語課程的推動,如何將圖畫故事書運用在兒童英語教學上的研究也漸漸受到重視,然而這些研究鮮少論及老師在使用圖畫故事書時可能面臨的挑戰。本研究採用質的研究方式,訪談十位具有使用英語圖畫故事書教學經驗的老師,探討他們在使用這些書時面臨到的挑戰。研究顯示,老師認為班級人數過多以及圖畫故事書的不足是他們在教學上所面臨最大的挑戰,而圖畫故事書中大量的單字則是學生面臨的最大挑戰。受訪老師也提出他們如何使用不同的教學策略來解決這些問題。這些策略包括:大聲朗讀故事、使用投影機說故事、運用戲劇的方式說故事、簡化故事、使用母語以及圖畫。這些策略一方面顯示老師如何運用不同的教法解決使用圖畫故事書所面臨的挑戰,另一方面也顯示他們對於將圖畫故事書教育價值的肯定。所有參與本研究的老師都指出他們會繼續將英文圖畫故事書運用在兒童英語教學上。

Following the introduction of English lessons to primary school students in Taiwan in 2001, a number of researchers (Huang, 2002; Nantz, 2002) have discussed the benefits of integrating English picture story books into EFL teaching; few, however, have addressed the challenges of using English picture story books in EFL teaching. This study employed semi-structured interviews to investigate teachers' views on the challenges of using English picture story books with primary school children in Taiwan. Ten EFL teachers who had experience using English picture story books with primary school students participated in this study. The results suggested that the teachers perceived large class sizes and the limited availability of English picture story books to be the main challenges they encountered, and that vocabulary was the main challenge their students encountered when reading the books. Teachers also reported how they applied various strategies to deal with the challenges, which included the use of reading aloud, data projectors, role-playing, use of the mother tongue, pictures and simplifying the text. Despite the challenges the teachers have to deal with, all of them maintained that they would continue to use English picture story books in EFL teaching, which, to some extent, reflected the teachers' belief in the educational value of English picture story books in English teaching.
