Development and Application of a Corpus-Based Online Pronunciation Learning System for Chinese Learners of English

以語料庫為本之英文發音學習系統的建立及應用

摘要


本計劃建立了一個英文學習者語料庫的英文發音學習系統,以幫助英文學習者、老師、以及語言研究者更加地認識香港和中國大陸英文學習者的發音困難,並為學習者提出一些改善發音的方法和建議。本語料庫收集了來自香港及大陸大學生的朗讀和談話的語料,共計12小時。除原始錄音檔之外,研究者為語料增加了語音注解,其中包括三種音段特徵(母音、輔音和音節結構)和四種超音段特徵(詞彙重音、停頓、連音和語調)。除語料庫外,本發音教學系統還為學習者和老師提供了大量發音學習資料和練習網站,以及一個聲學語音學軟體PRAAT的初學者使用手冊。本文更進一步介紹討論了這個以語料庫為本的發音學習網站如何在香港教育學院的教師培訓課程中應用。

In this project, a corpus-based pronunciation learning system was established to help learners, teachers, and researchers to (1) identify Hong Kong and mainland Chinese learners’ recurrent segmental and suprasegmental difficulties in learning English pronunciation, and (2) suggest possible remedies that may reduce or eliminate such difficulties and enhance intra- and inter-cultural communication. The phonological corpus contains roughly 12 hours of recorded data from two speech tasks (reading-aloud and interview) performed by Hong Kong and mainland college students. The phonological annotations of the recordings mainly focused on three areas of segmental features (vowels, consonants, and syllable structures) and four areas of supra-segmental features (lexical stress, pausing, linking, and intonation). Apart from the corpus, a pronunciation-learning website was developed for learners to (1) discover the possible causes of common pronunciation features spotted in the corpus, (2) practice segmental and suprasegmental aspects of pronunciation through a variety of perception and production exercises, and (3) learn basic sound analysis techniques via a Praat beginners’ manual developed by the research team. In this paper, the use of learner corpora in two levels of teacher training courses in the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) will also be introduced and discussed.
