The importance of general education has been recognized in universities and colleges in Taiwan over the past twenty years. It has been further agreed that efforts must be made to enhance the quality of general education courses in the twenty-first century. Starting from the meaning of ”learning,” we explore in the first section the various meanings of ”learning” in the East Asian Confucian traditions. We indicate that the two major trends in East Asian Confucianism lie in taking ”learning” either as the awakening of one's subjectivity or as the cultivation of one's social consciousness. In the third section, we analyze the inseparability and tensions between the above two goals of study. We insist, in the forth section, that dynamic equilibrium must be maintained between the subjectivity and social consciousness in the context of Taiwan's university general education.
