The intention of this research was to investigate the points considered in the judging of ballroom dancing contests, and study the situations of differences among judges, competitors and spectators, and differences of sex or of length of experience. The research was carried out on 28 judges, 40 competitors and 44 spectators chosen from natives of the R.O.C., and the method used was the filling out of questionnaires. After the answers had been analyzed by the Principle-Factor solution method, the following conclusions were reached: 1. In the judgement of ballroom dancing contests dancing technique is considered the most important point, and secondarily a sense of music, external appearance, applause from the spectators, and personal relationships are also important factors. 2. In dancing technique the most important element are: the basic movements, mastery of the music, control of the center of balance, fluidity of the movements, and the line of the body. After these in importance are care for each movement, feeling for speed and power, and equal ability to bring out the special character of each kind of dance. Much less importance is given to dancing movements of greater difficulty, or creating new steps. 3. As for status (judge, competitor, spectator), sex, length of experience (2 to 10years), the differences from one group to another are not very great. 4. Ballroom dancing contests are not objective enough; the competitors' feeling on this was particularly strong.
