The Nursing Experience of Postpartum Care for an Immigrant Woman Who Lost Her Family in a Disaster and was Rebuilding a New Family

This article described the nursing experience of postpartum care for an immigrant woman who lost her family after Typhoon Morakot and was rebuilding a new family. The nursing period was from November 29 to December 2 with one-month follow up after postpartum by telephone in 2010. The author applied family assessment and Leininger transculture theory to evaluate her postpartum health and transculture health issues. The identified health problems included pain, ineffective breastfeeding, and anxiety. We used comforting care skill to decrease her postpartum physical discomfort. Nursing accompany, listening, and mental support were used to decrease anxiety of the subject. Her success of breastfeeding and mothering experience encouraged her to establish the maternal role. Her family successfully adapts to the transformation postpartum period. We expect this nursing experience can provide further nursing directions for caring the vulnerable population in disaster families and immigrant women.
