The Institute of Oriental Manuscripts at the Russian Academy of Sciences preserves an interesting Tangut Buddhist text, The Eight Precepts for Lay People on Fasting Days, which is believed to be a translation from its Chinese original in the neighboring Liao Empire. This paper translates this Buddhist text from Tangut back into Chinese and traces its citations to Chinese sources. The text lists many Tantric dharanis and practices. I believe that the text reflects the reality of Tangut Buddhism, which was an amalgamation of Exoteric Buddhism and Esoteric Buddhism.
