Individual, Family, and Nation: Lin Erjia and Banqiao Lin Family's Two Garden

Being the top family in the late Qing Taiwan, Banqiao Lin family created a legend for over three generations. However, his fate was linked to the wax and wane of the country. The first part of this paper briefs the history of Banqiao Lin family and the formation of his family philosophy. It points out how the family philosophy and the owners' characteristics shaped the Banqiao Garden's style. The discussion of the relationship between Liu Garden at Suzhou and Banqiao Garden at Taipei highlights how elements of Chinese classic garden were re-interpreted and localized in Taiwan. The second part describes the grow the and character of one of the Lin family's members-Lin Erjia, who played elite roles in Xiamen since they ere forced to return there in 1895. The analysis of Shuzhuang Garden shows how Lm Erjia materialized his unspoken dream of individual, family and nation in the garden design. Finally, this paper exposes the conflicts and compromises of Chinese elite faced in the early 20th century when China was suffering from foreign invasion and civil war.
