A Questionnaire Survey of Computer Literacy and Attitudes Towards Computer-assisted Learning among Dental Students and Faculty

The application of information technology in education has been a focus of educational reform. Traditional teaching methods have limitations in conveying exponentially growing knowledge to students. Information technology is one possible way of dealing with the rapid growth of knowledge. As in most other fields, dental education can benefit from the application of computers in teaching. Basic computer skills can make the faculty and students more productive. It is the aim of this study to survey the computer experience and basic computer skills of the students and faculty of this dental school, and determine their attitude toward Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI). In the beginning of three consecutive academic years, question naires were sent out to dental students, and were sent to faculty in the last year. Over10% of dental students did not use a computer in the 1995 academic year. The percentage decreased to about 3% in 1997. Most students used a computer at home or in the dormitory. The frequency of computer use at these two places was significantly higher than in other places. Most students and faculty used a computer for word processing. There was a significant increase in Internet connections from “”academic year 1996 to 1997.BBS was the most popular activity on the Internet for the students, but the faculty used WWW more than BBS. Confidence in independent computer operation increased over the years. However, almost half of the dental students can not create a graphic document independently. No matter what the capability of students or faculty, they all believe a computer-assisted learning environment will be easier, more practical, and more pleasant. This study demonstrated that the students and faculty in this dental school need formal training in dental informatics. They also have a positive attitude toward a computer-assisted learning environment in dental education.
