The purpose of this study was to evaluate learning in an anatomy course taught to allied health science students. The anatomy curriculum was designed for students from the department of nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical technology, pharmacy, and public health at the National Taiwan University (NTU). A total of 246 qualified questionnaires were collected from 258 students taking the anatomy course during the year 2000. Analysis of the questionnaires revealed that only 1% of students reported difficulty coping with the anatomy curriculum. Nevertheless, 24% of students responded honestly that their study of anatomy was only just good enough for the examination. Multiple choice questions were used to analyze the study resources used by students, and it was found that more than 90% of students counted on the syllabus with translation of anatomical terms instead of reading the original textbook (77%) when they were learning the anatomy. The translated Chinese version of the anatomical textbook was not as popular (13%) among the students. Further analysis of responses also revealed that more than 82% of students agreed that the anatomy teaching would be very helpful (10%) or helpful (72%) in their future professional courses. This indicates that the anatomy curriculum, designed for sophomores, is appropriately timed. In this study, it was found that clinically orientated students, such as from nursing, physical therapy, and occupational therapy, had greater expectations of the quantity and quality of anatomy laboratory teaching. This suggests that the laboratory anatomy training is much more important for these students. Notwithstanding clinical applications, 97% of students agreed that the anatomy course improved their understanding of the body. In conclusion, informative feedback regarding student learning and anatomy curriculum design was obtained with questionnaires completed by students of nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, medical technology, pharmacy, and public health. The student responses from the various departments will help to guide basic medical education curriculum design. (Full text in Chinese)
