Assessment or evaluation of student performance in a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum is difficult to plan or implement. For many medical schools which have switched to a PBL learning format, planning for the evaluation methods is usually left to the last moment, so that they usually ended up using traditional evaluation methods based on factual recalls, mostly due to their familiarity with these methods. Because evaluation methods often have a direct influence on the learning style of the students, the use of these traditional evaluation methods usually have a negative influence on the learning style of the students, thereby reducing the impact of PBL. The purpose of this review is to discuss various evaluation methods with a particular focus on methods which are applicable to PBL, so that we can make intelligent use of these methods in our PBL curriculum. I will also share our experience at McMaster University to show how we can use evaluation methods to help our students to pass their licensing examination without affecting the overall curriculum.
