前現代(Pre-Modern)時期的Typography演變之初探

以設計風格而言，「前現代」是指由維多利亞風格演變為現代主義風格這段時程；而「前現代時期的Typography演變」則是依循Typography的發展脈絡，從「現代字型的發展史」、「藝術史」及「文化史」的觀點下，將種種影響演變的因子逐一探討。因而，本主題必須更廣闊論及，現代主義尚未出現，但卻影響著前現代時期Typography演變的前因脈絡－即從字體設計的「現代字型的發展」作為討論起點，將現代字型的發源，重新溯源自十五世紀羅馬體的發展；然後參照前現代時期的社會文化脈絡，逐一探討「維多利亞時期的設計風格」、「工業革命的衝擊」、「美術工藝運動的反撲」，以及「新藝術運動思維」的內在意涵；方能了解當時這些運動與思潮，如何影響前現代時期的Typography演變的複雜淵源。工業革命將人類文明，由舊的、手工技藝的時代，推向新的、機械化、工業化的現代。工業革命為Typography提供龐大供需市場，促使Typography相較過去更加快汲取不同設計風格而蛻變的演化腳步；工業革命也帶來空前的排版技術革命，特別是石版印刷術的發明，使得文字編輯設計師得以繪畫、手創方式，就能創造出新字型。至此，前現代時期的Typography，藉由新技術展現歷經「美術工藝運動」，以及「新藝術運動」洗禮的多元設計風格，並進而搖身一變成爲誘發消費者注視的視覺利器！

Industrial revolution brings human culture from the age of craft to Modern Industry. Industrial revolution also provides the great market of Typography, and increase the evolution of the typography. Industrial revolution bring new technology of Typography especially the new rock Typography, and make the typographers create the new typeface of typography. Pre-Modern Arts and Crafts Movement、Art Nouveau provide new technology of Typography Visual design.
