In this paper I will discuss generational differences in the use of the modal form ”karnoshirenai” and ”mitaida”.It is commonly accepted that the use of adjectives alone, such as in the examples (la) and (ib) below, are natural. While the use of ”kamoshirenai” and ”mitaida” in conjunction with adjectives as in the examples (2a) and (2b) are not.(1a) (While eating) Oishii.(ib) ? (While eating) Oishii-kamo.(2a) (Watashi wa) kikubari ga dekiru hito ga suki.(2b) ? (Watashi wa) kikubari ga dekiru hito ga suki-mitai.However, according to a survey conducted by the author, younger generations tended to have a higher degree of tolerance for (ib) and (2b). In this paper I assert this is due to a difference in ”point of observation” between generations.
