The association between the cranial base morphology and the Class Ⅲ malocclusion is still not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the morphological characteristics of the cranial base in adult Taiwanese Class Ⅲ malocclusion. Lateral cephalographs of 100 Taiwanese adults included equalnumbers of male and female individuals, with Class Ⅲ malocclusion were compared with their counterparts with a normal occlusion. Fourteen land marks on the cranial base were indentified and digitized. Cephalometric analysis, utilizing 7 linear and 4 angular measurements, were undertaken. Results indicated that the cranial base morphology differed statistically significantly between the two groups. It is concluded that the shape of the cranial base differs in subjects with Class Ⅲ malocclusion compared with the normal occlusion configuration, due to deficient orthocephalization, or failure of the cranial base to flatten during development.
