It has been suggested that severe hypozincemia and a decrease in copper/zinc ratio were found in the myocardium of patients with acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure. Recently, zinc has been considered one of the most important trace elements in the body because it has a dual effect of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. A previous study reported that higher myocardial levels of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities were found in zinc-supplemented diabetic swimming rats, resulting in a decreased level in myocardial lipid peroxidation. In addition, pre-treatment with zinc before reperfusion may be a potential clinical strategy to provide the cardioprotective effects against ischemia-reperfusion injury. Thus, regular exercise, combined with adequate amounts of zinc supplementation, may be the most efficient way to enhance cardioprotective effects. It is suggested that future sports medicine research could explore how to avoid loss of zinc ion and zinc ion concentrations in the heart and improve heart cells, to enhance the effect myocardial protection against ischemia-reperfusion.
