To achieve its goals, an organization must rely on its team's efforts and the leader's fulfillment of a core position of the team. Using job authority and a pyramid management scheme cannot fully achieve the highly effective leadership that an organization needs. Respecting each team member's value has become an important quality of modern leadership, with each member developing an individual autonomy and putting effort towards achieving the team's goals. In recent years in Europe and the United States, servant leadership has become an area of continuous development in the study and application of strong leadership skills. Servant leadership and humane caring are both crucial for the nursing profession. This article describes the implied meaning and concept of servant leadership, introduces common measurement scales, makes suggestions in terms of how to apply servant leadership in clinical nursing, nursing administration, organizational structure, educational system, and nursing research. This article may be used as a reference for nursing professionals during times of nursing shortage.
