A Project to Improve Public Participation in Dementia Screening in Communities

Early treatment can delay cognitive function decline in patients with dementia. However, the symptoms of early dementia are subtle, which often lead to delays in early diagnosis and treatment. Our hospital held 3 dementia prevention and screening events in 2013, but only 34 people participated. We were prompted to improve the project to achieve early diagnosis and treatment among community residents. Analysis of the conditions revealed that the public were ill-informed about dementia, and did not know when or where to participate in the dementia screenings. Additionally, inadequate event promotion, insufficient screening personnel, and the passive encouragement to the public in participation and examination had contributed to the ill-effect of the events. Subsequently, the following improvements were implemented: re-plan the dementia prevention and treatment course, design diversified event content, establish interdisciplinary team cooperation models, hold training sessions for screening personnel, establish referral procedures for dementia cases, and increase event promotion. Consequently, the number of people participating in the 2014 screening events increased up to 661. Through interdisciplinary team cooperation, and by designing diverse activities for preventing dementia, we successfully increased public participation in dementia screenings.
