Taiwan in the Male Body?-the Discourse of Nation in Li Ang's Gay Male Characters

It is difficult to argue that the gay men portrayed in Li Ang's works are representative of gay men in the real world; rather, they are constructions that reflect gender, sexual orientation, and conventional power structures, in which the author's thoughts on gender and feminism are projected onto the gay male body. This study analyzed the gay men portrayed in some of Li-Ang's works-Forbidden Love, Colorful Blood Sacrifice, Mysterious Garden, and Bewitching Love-and adopted the discourse of nation to examine Li Ang's narrative on gay men as metaphors for Taiwan's past and future. In addition, this study focused on how changes in the male gay space and forms of resistance are used to express the male desire and body, suggesting their inferences on Taiwan's situation. Furthermore, the stigma attached to AIDS and crossdressing was used to analyze the association between gay men and Taiwan's history and politics. While the evolution of the gay male characters in Li Ang's works showcases her breakthrough in gay writing, it also reveals the dilemma of male gay characters being instrumentalized and robbed of their subjectivity.
