Identifying Seed Structures Affecting the Germination of Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata L.) Seedsp

甘藍種子呈褐色,小圓粒形,種皮光滑。使用三個甘藍品種之種子研究種子內含物與其胚根突破種皮時間之關係,指出與種子構造對發芽影響,結果指出在電子顯微鏡觀察下,發現‘CA49’種皮內部呈現網狀(reticulate),外部成網狀凹陷(reticulate-foveate),而‘228’和‘秋王’的種皮內外部均呈網狀凹陷。不同品種之種子有不同的發芽時間,‘CA49’、‘228’、和‘秋王’的發芽時間分別為11、17、和25小時,吸水量方面以‘228’品種最少。在種子內含物方面,‘CA49’品種總可溶性糖與粗脂肪含量顯著最高,‘228’則以澱粉與可溶性蛋白質顯著最高,而‘秋王’則以芥子鹼含量顯著最高。由以上甘藍種子研究顯示種子吸水量及發芽速度與胚內含物及種皮構造有關。

As cabbage is propagated by seeds, these seeds were used in this study to understand how the seed structure affects seed germination performance. Three cultivars of cabbage, 'CA49', '228' and 'Autumn King' were selected and their testa structures were examined using a scanning electron microscope and paraffin sections. The outer seed coats of all three cultivars and the inner seed coats of '228' and 'Autumn King' were of the reticulate-foveate type, while the inner seed coat of 'CA49' was of the reticulate type. The epidermal cells of the outer integument of all cultivars consisted of mucilage layers and sub-epidermal parenchyma cells which had thickened walls. The size of sub-epidermal cell was in the order of 'CA49'> 'Autumn King'> '228'. Seeds of the three varieties had different germination periods, with the radicle protrusion time for 'CA49', '228', and 'Autumn King' being approximately 11, 17, and 25 h, respectively. The seeds of '228' absorbed the least water. Among the three cultivars, 'CA49' seeds contained the highest levels of total soluble sugar and crude fat, '228' seeds contained the highest levels of starch and soluble protein, and 'Autumn King' seeds contained the least level of total soluble sugar and soluble protein. The amount of water absorbed during imbibition and the period of radical protrusion were related to seed testa structure and the components in the embryo.
