Background: The importance of accurate triage becomes more apparent as emergency department (ED) volumes increase and resources from National Health Insurance decrease. In Taiwan, only limited literature has been available regarding triage performance. In this study, we conducted a survey that focused on triage criteria definitions within the Taiwan triage system. Methods: One hundred and fifty ED nursing stalls were included. The respondents were asked to re-categorize the triage categories according to their daily practice experience. Clinical and statistical criteria were used for interpreting levels of examiner agreement. Results: There were 129 evaluable responses. The percentage of agreement ranged from 56.6% to 100% for level I categories, from 24.6% to 79.8% for level Ⅱ, and from 38.8% to 88.4% for level Ⅲ. Conclusion: We suggest the Emergency Medicine expert panel instigate a full-scale study and evaluation of current Taiwan triage tools to ensure that ED triage criteria are applied in a more consistent manner.
