Purpose: To create a major trauma registry system at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in order to understand the pattern of major trauma in the south of Taiwan. Materials and Methods: Prospectively, we collected the major trauma patients from our Emergency Department from January 1, 2004 to December 31, 2004. The age, sex, trauma associated initial information, vital signs, evaluations, management, the length of hospital stay, the length of ICU stay and Injury Severity Score (ISS) were recorded by the staff. Results: A total 12546 trauma patients visited our Emergency Department in this period. Of these patients, there were 504 major trauma patients made up of 367 males and 137 females. Traffic accident was the most common trauma mechanism (324/504, 64.5%) and patients aged 35-44 were the largest group. In total, 99 patients died after trauma, most caused by a motorcycle-accident. There were 45 patients (8.9%) who were ISS 1-9, 47 patients were ISS 10-15 (9.3%), 192 patients (38.1%) were ISS 16-24 and the remainder, 212(42.1%), were ISS >24. Conclusion: This hospital treats many major trauma patients. There is a need to continue the trauma registry work in order to promote trauma education and thus improve trauma care quality.
