What is «the task of the translater» today? After Benjamin’s thesis, we cannot regard it as a mere transfer of meaning or sense any more. Instead, we consider it as the uncovering of the archi-original element only from which the system of languages can start to function. Victor Segalen is a poet who sacrificed his own existence in order to focus upon this element. And Stéphane Mallarmé is another poet whose crucial works explore its potential forces. This very « poetics of translation » could be a strategy to deconstruct the domination of the world through the coercion of a single language and the fabrication of a unitary conception of humanity.
