Falling the number one accident among inpatients. The incidence of falls in relatively high in GI inpatients. To lower the morbidity rate from falls, prevention is most important. The goals of this refined program include the following (1) listing risk factors contributing to falls in GI inpatients; (2) identifying the GI inpatients with high-risk factors of falls; (3) educating the high-risk patients how to avoid accidental falls; (4) finding the model of fall prevention in GI inpatients. The incidence of falls in our GI ward was 108.5 per 100,000 in 1998. It lowered to 53.9 per 100,000 after the prevention program for the first year in 1999. Furthermore, it is even lower to-date in 2000. The incidence of falls in GI inpatients is currently near zero after implementing the prevention program for 13 to 15 months. We conclude this refined program is effective in preventing falls of GI patients.
