A Survey Study of Media Literacy and Healthy Lifestyle among Older Adults

Background: Media literacy can influence individual behavior and lead to a healthy lifestyle. However, there is a lack of discussion on the relationship between aging and media in Taiwan. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the correlation between media literacy and healthy lifestyle among older adults. Purpose: The aim of this study was to understand the relationship between media literacy and healthy lifestyle among older adults. Method: This was a cross-sectional study and surveyed older adults aged 65 or older who used the internet and media tools. The measurement tools used were the personal information, Media Literacy Skills Scale and the Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile. The questionnaires were distributed in both online and paper formats. Results: A total of 223 questionnaires were collected. The results showed a significant positive correlation between the different dimensions and total scores of media literacy skills and healthy lifestyle (all of p < .01). Furthermore, the "analysis" (β = -.33), "communication" (β = .40), and "evaluation" (β = .45) dimensions of media literacy skills, as well as the frequency of media tool use (β = .15), significantly influenced healthy lifestyle. These factors explained 30.9% of the variance, indicating that higher abilities in "communication," "evaluation," and frequency of media tool use were associated with better performance in healthy lifestyle. Conversely, the "analysis" dimension of media literacy had a negative impact on the healthy lifestyle, meaning that the higher the ability, the worse the performance of the healthy lifestyle. Conclusion: Media literacy skills have a positive impact on healthy lifestyle among older adults. This result can serve as a reference for educational institutions to integrate media literacy skills into health promotion courses and activities, thereby maintaining and promoting the health of older adults.
