Factors Associated with Self-perceived Quality of Life in Children and Adolescents with Physical Disability

Background and Purpose: The aims of this study were to investigate the self-perceived quality of life (QOL) in childhood and adolescent students with physical disability (PD), and to examine factors associated with their QOL. Methods; Sixty-three children and adolescents with PD aged 11-18 years were recruited from primary to high schools (5th grade or above) in Kaohsiung city to participate in the study. The Student Version of the Comprehensive Quality of Life Scale (ComQOL) was used to measure self-perceived QOL. Two-sample t-test was used to test any significant differences in QOL scores between genders, age groups, disability levels and class settings. Results: There were no significant differences in QOL score among genders or disability levels. Significantly lower QOL score in the domains of health, safety and emotion wellbeing were found in the older age (16 to 18 years) group compared with those of the younger age (11 to 15 years) group. Higher QOL score domain of the place in community was also found in the older age group. Compared with students of special class and inclusive class had significantly lower QOL score in the domain of emotional wellbeing. Conclusions: Age and class setting are likely to affect self-perceived QOL in children and adolescents with PD. These should be taken into considerations when special educators and parents attempt to improve life adaptation and learning performance for students with PD.
