Analysis of Badminton Players' On-Court Movement Trajectories From the Competition Data

The purpose of this study was to analyze the movement trajectory of seven world's top badminton men's singles players in the actual matches, as a reference for practical training, competition application, and research. Notational analysis and data analysis used Badminton Coach AI platform (shot by shot labeling tool) based on the competition videos of the top 8 events of the Badminton World Federation World Tour Super 1000. Results showed that the most movement trajectories between preparative and hitting positions were concentrated in the central area of midcourt, and then were from central area toward right rear and right midcourt. On the other hand, the most movement trajectories between hitting positions and the next hitting positions were also concentrated in the central area of midcourt, and then are from right rear toward central area and from central area toward right front. Second, when the players were preparative and in the hitting positions in the forecourt, the most likely trajectory was toward the backcourt; when in the midcourt or backcourt, they were likely to move toward central area. Third, the diagonal and straight movements were more frequent than horizontal (left-right) movements. Fourth, the winning player's trajectory moving to the midfield after hitting the ball in the backcourt was significantly higher than that of the losing player. Our results conclude that players should strengthen the following movement training, back and forth from the central area to the right court (front, middle, back), diagonal and straight in front to back, fast short straight in the forecourt, and from backcourt to midcourt.
