The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of different fraction extracts of Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. (PM) on brain oxidant status, neurotransmitters, monoamine oxidase and serum lipids in senescence accelerated mice. One-month-old mice were fed with a control diet, and either a diet supplemented with PM fraction extracted by ethyl acetate (EA), n-butanol (n-B) or water diets for 18 weeks. The results showed that the body weight, food intake, dopamine (DA), homovanillic acid (HVA) of the different PM fraction extract groups did not differ with the control group, whereas the 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) and 5-HIAA/5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) ratio were higher than the control diet group (p<0.05). The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and monoamine oxidase-B activity of the hippocampus in the EA diet group were higher than the control group, while the n-B diet group had significantly lower triglyceride and total cholesterol concentration than the other groups. The results of this study indicated that the physiological function of PM need further study.
