Departments of Japanese Language and Literature have been founded one after another by higher education institutions for over fifty years since 1960s in Taiwan. More than 40 colleges have founded Japanese-related departments to date, being nurturing uncountable professionals of Japanese languages who are active in social circles. However, with the progress of the trends and social changes, the substance of Japanese education and researches of higher education institutions in Taiwan changed as well. This study attempts to see the advance of Japanese classical literature studies in Taiwan and the challenges we are faced with, by reviewing scholars’ academic works, academic journals and seminars held in universities and academic associations of Taiwan, and etc. Furthermore, this thesis is going to consider the directions and the possibility of it.
