People with color vision deficiency have otherwise normal sight, so their daily life is largely unaffected. As a result, they are not easily recognized in school, though they might experience challenges in art classes. This study explored such persons' interests and aptitudes, challenges and coping strategies, and advanced visual art professional career decision making. The researchers carefully selected two visual art professionals with fine arts graduate degrees, who were recruited for their expertise in color perception. Applying the in-depth-interview method showed that interest was the major motivation for learning art, a goal the participants pursued without awareness of their color perception problem as they could perceive colors. The participants reported that during art courses, supportive peers and teachers enhanced their self-confidence while facing challenges after they had been diagnosed with color vision deficiency. Thereafter, they were able to develop personal ways of using colors, express their personal art style, and ultimately decide to pursue careers as advanced visual art professionals.
