Echoes of Scripture in the Lettersof Paul
The concept of Intertextuality was proposed in the middle-end period of the twentieth century. The concept has been influential not only in the field of literature but also in philosophy, theology and communication studies. Intertextuality, postmodernism, and deconstruction are almost on a par. Structuralism provided the mainstream interpretation theories in the middle part of the twentieth century. Its basis lay in the 'linguistic turn' discussed in Saussure's theory of language. Later the concept of intertextuality was used to criticize structuralism. It corresponded to the 'hermeneutic turn' together with which it formed the most important methodology of interpretation in the postmodern epoch. This term was first used in literary theory by J. Kristeva in 1960. In biblical study it did not appear until 1990. R. Hays used it in his Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul to explain Paul's hermeneutic theology. This book led to many responses in the circle of New Testament Study. The main issues in this article are: (1) the relation between the concept of intertextuality and linguistics, (2) the use of this concept by biblical scholars such as R. Hays and S. Alkier, (3) the contribution of this concept to the interpretation of the Bible and the form of theology.
