The female figure in the history of Chinese literature had been mostly described as a lover or a wife before Yuan Dynasty Opera. Comparing to the diversity of identities as a female, the figure of motherhood had been rarely noticed until Yuan Dynasty Opera. The vivid figure of motherhood in Yuan Dynasty Opera filled up the gap in the system of characteristic figure in Chinese literature. In view of the existing Yuan Dynasty Opera, the figure of motherhood has involved various identities which have affected on how they dealt with the incidents occurring to them. Therefore, the figure of motherhood in Yuan Dynasty Opera has been considered as an integrated and representative group. The purpose of the present study aims to discuss the figures of motherhood from the existing Yuan Dynasty Opera in view of its literary styles, aesthetic perspectives, and its symbolic meanings.
