Uncertainty is a sense of feeling. Patients might easily have uncertainty when they encounter unfamiliar medical environments and uncontrollable conditions. Due to evolution of generations, uncertainty has evoked various definitions by scholars in different fields. This article, based on Walker and Avant (2011), conducts a concept analysis of uncertainty. It explores definitions, attributes, antecedents, consequences and empirical referents of uncertainty and clarifies the concept using three types of cases to improve better comprehension of uncertainty. This article might help nurses understand and apply this concept in clinical practice, provide individual inventions to decrease uncertainty of patients and their families, improve their comfort of mental health, and enhance nursing quality.
