Emotional distress is the sixth vital sign of patients, being relatively prevalent. Recently, the issue of "emotional distress" has attracted attention; however, a systemic and comprehensive conceptual analysis and discussion is lacking. The authors applied the method outlined by Walker and Avent (2011) to analyze the concept of emotional distress, its defining characteristics, and enumerate the examples to explain the concept. The conceptual definitions of emotional distress are: (1) A person, who is subject to external stimulation of the environment develops inner unpleasant emotional changes; (2) A multi-mobile, non-singular feeling; (3) At least two kinds of emotional manifestation; and (4) An unpleasant emotion repeated in a short time or for a period of time. This paper describes the defining characteristics of emotional distress, clarifies the concept, and confirms the predisposing factors and effects of emotional distress, using examples of a typical case, borderline cases, and a contrary case. In order to prevent the occurrence of emotional distress and promote the quality of nursing care, nursing staffs are expected to develop a better understanding of this concept and apply it in daily practice.
