Applying Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory to Assist a Colon Cancer Patient to Cope with Chemotherapeutic Process

This article described the nursing experience of applying Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory to assist a colon cancer patient in coping with chemotherapeutic process. During the nursing period from August 5 to November 26, 2014, data was collected via direct care, interview, and chart review. The major health problems were identified as followed: nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and hopelessness. We combined pharmacotherapy and non-pharmacologic intervention to improve the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and fatigue, and to meet the patient's basic physical needs; provided caring and family companionship to increase the patient's sense of security, and to satisfy her needs for love and belonging; and offered relevant information on treatment protocol to facilitate positive coping in her on the cancer diagnosis, regain hope for the future, and satisfy the higher hierarchy of needs. We hope this experience can serve as a reference for nurses when facing similar cancer patients.
