The Sleep Quality and Cognitive Function of Aircrew in ROCAF

Introduction: Insufficient sleep could induce fatigue and cause aircrew sloppy, inattentive, inefficient, and impaired cognitive function that would threat safety. The high work pressure, shift work, and long duty cycles could be the reasons of poor sleep quality. This study is to investigate the relationship between the sleep quality and cognitive function of aircrew. Methods: One hundred and twenty health pilots (34.4±7.0 ages) voluntarily participated this project. The quality of sleep was evaluated using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Cognitive function was assessed using Wisconsin Card Sorting Test-computer version 3 (WCST-CV3). Results: The average PSQI global score was 4.93±2.3. There were 35% of subjective classified as poor sleeper whose scores were over the cutoff point of 5. Comparing the scores of WCST between good sleeper group and poor sleeper group, we found significant difference from 50% of sub-items. Besides, significant correlation existed between PSQI and 50% of sub-items of WCST. Totally, 70% of sub-items of BSRS were also affected by the sleep quality. Conclusion: Sleep quality could affect the cognitive task of aircrew to some extent. Appropriate countermeasures will be required to improve their sleep quality for flying safety.
