Both Internal and External Titled Madams are those concubines of emperors except their empresses. Concubines in Song dynasty are of high reputation in their decency as well as modesty in China history. The system of Internal Titled Madams in Song dynasty, which is originated from that of Tang dynasty, is divided into five grades and twenty-five ranks. The progresses in Titled Madams' statuses are often entangled with power struggle because of their close to the center of power. This study is designated to conduct an examination on the promotion and demotion of Internal Titled Madams' status in Song dynasty through collecting and analyzing verified documents. The author asserts that beautiful appearance, morality and conduct, giving birth to emperor's sons, preference of emperor's father or mother, and interference from subordinates are important factors in the promotion and demotion of Internal Titled Madams' statuses.
